How to Clean a Bloody Comb

Sometime early last week - cannot remember the exact day, my little D'Uccle hen got into a fight with a grow out cockerel (she is less than 1 pound - he was over 8). He ripped part of her comb totally off, she had thick blood running down her face and I could not get it to stop bleeding. I packed her comb with tissue and put her to bed.

The next day she had a bit of tissue on her comb and went about her day. Today, you can see she is missing part, but you cannot tell it happened last week. I would say 10 days to heal nicely (at least for my little girl).

The cockerel is now resting in my fridge.

Well dumby me has lost the peroxide so im going to go and get some tomorrow... hopefully he looks fine by then. I'm going to call in my entry so that I can wait until the last minute to see whats going to happen with his comb

Thanks Guys

Sorry about your hen

I wouldn't use peroxide on it at this point. Peroxide is a disinfectant, but it also kills living cells, the cells that are doing the healing. If you're worried about infection, I'd use triple antibiotic ointment instead. But, I have come to be a minimalist in treating my animals - because ointments end up attracting dust and dirt which are probably more detrimental than an uncovered cut exposed to air.

My daughter had her roosters fight it out a week before a fair. At the one week mark, it was questionable - there were still scabs not ready to come off. But by 10 days, they would have been fine. We didn't do anything to treat it.

When you are ready to clean him up the day before the show, use a little water or mineral oil to soften the scabs and see if they are ready to come off.
