how to clean crust butt

Ok, I'm repeating what most everyone else said. I use a warm wet paper towel and dab until it's softened or if it's really bad I dip the little butt in warm water - then pick it off with the towel(they peep when you do this - ouch).
Check them frequently - it's easier to get off when it hasn't already hardened into some form of concrete.

If they'd just learn to wipe!

I don't think that would do any harm to try.

There are not that many that get pasty butts. I had one out of 8 chicks, and it was just one time right after arrival and then she was fine, with no oil on her little butt.

I had one little girl with a pasty butt in this batch. I picked her up gently and soothed her before taking her to the sink and washing her bottom with a warm wet rag. I put a dab of vicks on her since her umbilical cord looked a bit raw. She complained  while she was being washed but not one bit of problem after I fixed her up.

Mrs. Jray and I have been using a WARM wet washcloth to gently rmove the mess and this morning we treated with some EVOO. Strange using my really good olive oil to annoint a chickens butt. LOL!

We've been treating 3 of the 21 that arrived this past Thursday. I've also fed them some plain yogurt.

How long does the problem last?

My latest hatchling has had pasty butt ever since she hatched. But this is what I'm worried about. I wish I had a picture of this, but her butt sticks WAY out, like maybe its herniated. Its a real "outie." I'd like to know if anyone else had had a biddie like this, and I don't see how she'll be able to lay an egg. Or if, God forbid, shes a he, how that will work. Anybody out there with this problem????
