Let's turn this into a learning post. I am curious...........
Why did this happen in first place?
For those who have had chickens for many years do you see this happening often?
When this hen recovers, what next? Will she have to isolated so she doesn't do it again?
Can it be prevented?

You'd have a hard time giving her eggs when you healed though Txchknranchers!!!

I am extraordinarily sorry if I offended you. I cared enough TO care for her. I did not do this because I had the training, I did this to save her life. I AM blessed that I both had to do it AND had the training, but that is not WHY I did it. I did it because I love my chickens deeply and am willing to take care of them. Look at what came out of her crop and realize she would have died otherwise.

And if I was out camping with my family in the high desert like we do very often and are many miles and hours away from civilization, I would not hesitate to sew up a wound or set a broken bone either in my child or on one of my dogs, as I have had to do in the past.

The vast majority of the world at this point and the entire world up until 100 years ago HAD to deal with health issues on their own.

There are no vets within 50 miles of me that would deal with this and the ONE in Sac that would do it would charge over 200 dollars and he had never done it before either. That is not a wise use of my resources nor was just killing her for the sake of avoiding an unpleasant procedure.

I would not recommend this to anyone, ever, but if someone felt it needed to be done, I would gladly help them do it correctly, sanitarily, and quickly as possible. That was my only goal in posting this.

Again, please forgive if I offended anyone, it is the last thing I wanted to do. I saved my chicken's life and she is thriving now, and I wanted to share it with you.

How about we do this!

NC Catnip, would you start a new thread titled "impacted Crop-The causes and preventions" and we can discuss it there. This is a great topic, because we all of us have hens that could easily become impacted.

Thanks for everyone's participation!
Jeaucamom , you ROCK!
