how to find out if it's legal or illegal to have chickens?

Another chicken lover after my own heart! I'm in NC too and my town ordinance makes it illegal. All of my neighbors know about them, except maybe one, and I don't think they care at all. My chickens bother no one so why should anyone care? They produce less poop than my 3 dogs and they are contained in a beautiful coop and run. If they leave me alone, I'll leave them alone. Pick on me and my chickens and they will have a fight on their hands.

If you don't see something that says it's illegal, then no one else would know it's illegal. Keep them where they don't bother anyone and no one should know the difference. That's my opinion, anyway!

It sounds like you're perfectly legal to me, MamaChic21 and it sounds like your area is livestock-friendly. You could ask your zoning/code enforcement office just to double check and give you piece of mind.
