Hello,

A couple of weeks ago, I made a post about my hen laying eggs with bloody shells (that thread can be found here). Well, I just got the fecal test results back from the vet, and it turns out she has not only coccidiosis, but also roundworms. I was hoping to introduce my five pullets to the big coop soon, as they're outgrowing their little prefab coop. However, the hen with worms and coccidiosis has been living there (by herself) for about two months now. Is there a way to eliminate the coccidia and worms from the environment? The coop has wooden walls and floorboards, and the run is just plain dirt.

Short answer, no.
Coccidia oocysts exist naturally in the soil and you really can't get rid of them. Your hen got coccidiosis because of an overload of these parasites. Once you treat her and get it under control and try to heal her gut she should be okay. The same goes for the worms. It's really not so much the worms as their eggs that you need to be concerned with. The best way to kill them is sunlight and dryness. So if there are any areas of moisture in the run I would address them. I would just clean out the coop and put down fresh dry bedding.

I would treat for the roundworms if you already haven’t. Valbazen is very good, or you could use SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer or horse paste. We can give dosages if needed.
