Hi!
One of our hens (Rhode Island Red is the breed) jumped over the fence and was attacked by our dog. She had a big gash on her side. We put her by herself in an old chicken tractor. Penny’s wound was covered in skin and only needed to grow feathers by May 18th. She got wounded April 17th. It has now been 16 weeks and a day since then. We tried to introduce her back in around 8 weeks after the attack. They only wanted to fight with her. It’s 5 against 1. So I started researching and one said that by having them close to the flock will help. Penny is now in two cattle panels making an a-frame with a tarp on top and a perch inside with food and water. She has been this way since June at the very least. I also read that putting them inside the coop at night works sometimes too. What do you all think? Will that work? She really wants to go back to her flock.
Thank you!:D

Put her in a see no touch area and if you have a really friendly chicken put her with her so you release two out not one.
I agree. Does she have a sister or a buddy that she was always close to who is a top hen in the pecking order among the flock? If so try to put her with that one but watch them closely to make sure both are happy and that neither are harmed. If it works well only introduce them back into the flock with supervision and care.

Thank you! From what I can tell all tried to fight her. I have a little trouble telling them apart but I’m pretty sure no one was nice to her. :(
I don’t really want to let her out to find out who might be nice. I don’t want anyone to lose an eye.

Put her in a cage inside the coop. Or sneak her in at night. No one is gonna remember by day time. Chickens aren’t the brightest! 🤣🤣🤣

I had one with sour crop and sand in the crop that was so full. I called vet for advice and she suggested to put her down. I was so mad so I was determined to nurse her back to health. She is now healthy again (if you have this issue, I will be glad to share what I did) but the 4 hens are not accepting her back in the run. It appears to be two that are really bullying her. She stays high on the perches or ducked in a 5 gallon bucket. I have pulled the one and then a second today and put them in a pen. It seems like when one leaves another takes over. I do put them back on the roost at night but so far that has done nothing. I read that spraying all with vinegar water will make them all neutral and then they will reestablish pecking order. I haven’t tried it but it’s next on my list. Please keep us posted as what you try and what works!

I read on here somewhere if a hen was feed bullying to place her in a separate pen with feed and water but alone for a few days apart from the flock and then bring her back into the flock. Then the pecking order should have been shuffled around and reestablished and she should no longer feel as if she can bully over the feed. Maybe you could do something along these lines to help your hen???

Thank you! I will try that. She has been the sweetest one and it kills me to see them doing that to her. My first flock so I’m learning a lot at the front end of owning hens. We lost one because of a dislocated leg before they went to the coop.
