How to get my hens used to me picking them up?

I bet that's quite a sight watching you catch them...LOL... They will figure it out. I take it they free range? In a run? Is the coop always open for them? My older hens put my teenagers to bed.... when Big Mama says it's time to roost... they seem to follow her to bed :)

well, they have a run but I was never planning on to get 7, 6 girls, and 1 accidental rooster lol. but ever since I let them out once they love it because they ate all their grass indie so now they always go to the door in the run because they know I'm out and they want the space. Were building a little gated area around there coop and the run is I the middle of it so when I let them out I don't have to worry about watching them when I get there to feed but there also not going to like the fact that's its now less room cause its gate but they'll get used to it. I know one is accidentally going to fly over the fans but that's fine. There all 10-11 weeks and don't like to listen to anybody really.

If you are predator heavy, you could cover the run with an aviary netting... that should keep them in. But, if you have a lot of predators, you will need something more substantial to cover it with like hardware cloth. Its an expense... but, you will be able to sleep at night knowing they are safe! Type "how to predator proof my run" in the search bar... and just take a day and get all the ideas you need! Good Luck!

oh, there not going to be out all day I usually sit out with them and watch them or talk to them while there out fo the coop and they don't really wonder anywhere too far from the coop because they like to be close cause they know that's shelter so I don't really keep my eyes off of them. They're only out for like 30 minutes before I put them back in for the next couple hours and then let them out again. usually in the morning, they get to free-range for like 30 min they afternoon they get let out again.

I hope your coop and run are a good size... or they may have a revolution. But Good for you allowing them to free range! I have WAY to many critters looking for dinner.... I have Chicken tunnels everywhere...LOL.... But, mine don't mind too much. They just go with the flow!

lol, that nice and yeah my coop that we built wasn't planned for 7 chickens but is a good size for there size right now at least lol. So I let them out once in a while because they love the grass and love to jump and "fly" around the yard. But my yard is where we did a lot of projects and there a lot of tiny plastic that I'm cleaning up every day so far I think was good. My dad doesn't know how to clean up the garbage that flies around an getting into the ground lol

Well... keep your eyes open for it. They get ahold of EVERYTHING! My husband is ridiculous about picking up every little bit. It really is a good habit to get into. Chickens can be called to that big coop in the sky for no reason at all sometimes.... I would hate to be the reason one of them suffered. So... around we walk after every project... all bent over... looking. Quite comical really!

lol yeah, i wasn't planning for them to leave the coop so now that they do I'm always picking up something or having them spit something out for me. My dad is a landscape so he brought in some dirt for our garden and obviously the dirt has plastic pieces in it but like how do they get an apple sticker in it? lol its actually pretty funny but I usually yell at him well "yell" because I tell him to pick up the plastic pieces. I'm only 14 but I don't take no for an answer especially when it comes to the safety of my girls.

Good for you! LOL... Your chicks are people too! Keep at it... and keep asking those questions. This little "hobby" is very addicting... and you will become very good at it if you wont be afraid to ask! It's something that you will have for the whole of your life! You, my dear, will never be alone or hungry! :thumbsup

OH... and double check the size of your coop. Right now it may be little enough for it and be comfortable... In three months, maybe not. You will need 2 to 3 square ft per chicken of coop space, sometime 3 to 4 ft is better. :) Allowing them to free range will help with run space. 8 to 10 sq ft in the run per bird :) You are doing great!
