how to get rid of a hawk killing my chickens

ok so call me crazy but I have heard and seen videos of people saying that hawks don't like to attack all black australorps because the number one enemy of a hawk is a crow. So the hawk sees the all black bird and thinks its a crow and leaves the flock alone. Any truth to that or just BS

I heard that too. I let mine free range for short periods of time and I’m always out there with them, dressed in black and with mg black dog 😂.
Here’s hoping the black chicken thing is true 🤞

I haven't lost any black birds to hawks. I've only lost a few birds to other birds period though. Somehow they're not my main problem

really so the hawks were still around with all black chickens hmmm ok thanks for the input
I lost a rooster last year to a red-tailed hawk. I had to replenish my flock anyway, so I got some Black Australorps. I am very pleased with the fact that they do indeed look like a nice flock of big, black crows. And I have not seen or heard a hawk since they got old enough to hang out outside.

After the hawk attack in which one of my two good roos was taken, I kept my chickens confined in a small run that a hawk can't get into, for 4-5 days. Hawks are opportunistic hunters. He came back the next day, and the day after. But the groceries were not readily available, so he went hunting elsewhere, looking for easier pickings.

I also made shelters for my birds. Hidey-holes they can duck under quickly if they see danger in the skies. I haven't lost another bird since then.

I guess I am one of those bleeding-heart hippies that believes we can live in harmony with nature, it just takes some planning. Good luck! :highfive:

It’s illegal to kill hawks everywhere in the US. They get splattered all over the highways diving for pigeons and doves off signs and poles. There’s tons of hawks everywhere. For every hawks there’s a bleeding heart hippy so best to keep your issues to yourself.
Or a tree hugger like my neighbor. She won't let her husband kill the family of skunks underneath one of their sheds. I think they wandered off this past summer. I never smelt them and neighbor across the street shot one in his garage.

Although the crows around here chase our goshawks and raise hell whenever they see them, the last chicken killed by a goshawk was all black. But she was half broody and therefore not as quick to respond to the roosters warnings.
