re: salt in the carpets to kill the fleas - that is one of the solutions the pros use for de-infesting a house, however it has to be superfine ground (not like table salt) and it needs to be liberally applied to *all* carpeted surfaces, then worked in so it gets down in the base layer or pad where the flea eggs are. it dehydrates the flea eggs. regular vacuuming over several months brings much of it back out, but by then the eggs are done and the repro cycle is broken. (I have a great aunt who is a crazy cat lady and this was the last option before replacing all the carpets in her house.) not cheap, but definitely worked, and no chemicals. not sure that table salt would work because of the crystal size.

Instead of salt you can also use borax (found in laundry dept). Sprinkle in carpets & leave for a few days then vaccum (make sure to replace the vac. bag as fleas will crawl out).
I have used garlic & brewers yeast in the past but no longer do. I have friends who use essential oils (rosmary perhaps???? can't remember for sure) with good success.
We have had great success with ACV in the drinking water (1 tbs per gallon water). NOTHING totally eliminates fleas but using baths & the ACV & Vectra D every few months controls them for us. The ACV helps eliminates the need for using the Vectra every month. I use a flea & tick shampoo by BioGroom that is gentle but effective and typically bathe every 3 or 4 weeks. With 8 dogs - thats all I do - I do not treat the yard with insecticide as I have guineas. We have hardwood floors so do not have to treat carpet either. Find a flea or two on the dogs at times but never more than that.
If you already have an epidemic then you need to treat the animals, the house & the yards all at the same time or you will just prolong the infestation by bringing more in. There are several products out there like Hi Yeild Bug Blaster II that are well liked if you dont mind using an insecticide on your yard.
Good luck!

just dab some lemon juice on a towel and rub it all around your chickens. Or you could soak some lemons cut in half in a quart of water and spray them with the water. Anything with lemon, they hate it for some reason.
