how to get rid of mold on the ground

I am so glad for BYC and for those of you who give advice to a newbie chicken tender like myself. I have been having a big problem with mold in my chicken pen. I thought it was from the drainage issue from my neighbor’s property (which DEFINITELY hasn’t helped). But I also realized that it’s probably because I also spread some of the feed on the ground with their scratch. I am going to try to get the lime and see if it works… as long as it doesn’t hurt my chickens to have direct contact with it.
I use Saturday Lime supposed to be safe for chickens

Another point, is you are overfeeding. I did this when I first started. When chickens are over fed, and you bring them food, they still act all excited, and race to check it out, but they leave a lot of it, it gets trampled into the soil, and begins to rot, mold and stink.

I went to feeding in flat dishes, but I check it each night, if it is empty, I feed a little more, if there is left over, I feed a little less. One would think that eventually you would get an exact amount, but really it varies quite a bit.

This keeps all the feed cleaned up. And the mold, and stink is not an issue. It saves a lot of money too, as wasted feed is expensive.
