How to Grow a Blueberry Bush

Chicken proofing is a bit of a project. Next year I need cages for the beans and peas.

The thought of a four foot blueberry bush is weird to me, ours only grow about ten inches high, fifteen max.
4-6 feet in the woods,a nd 8 feet by the driveway-- saved during construction of the driveway.

I grew up in Maine( US) with low bush blueberries and American cranberries; in Massachusetts my grand mother had many high bush blue berries and no lowbush blueberries.

HIgh bush is MUCH easier on the back while picking!!

Even better.

If I take the suckers and give them a clean cut, can I set them right into the soil??

Yes. Generally rootone is needed for woody plants. Tomatoes do not need it and neither to grape slips. It is like a house plant--just pop the slip into the dirt and roots will come out from the joint.

Grape slips??????? We have lots of wild grapes here, and none are where it is convenient. So how do I take a cutting. A leaf? Or the end of a vien with a leaf and a section of main trunk??

I live in California, so the grapes here are Table like Thompson Seedless or Wine Grapes.

You use Dormant cuttings and put them where you want them so you need to wait until Fall or Winter. You can also start them in a pot.

My handyman has 5 rows of grapevines and he promised me cuttings. He said the now is good for the soft cuttings. Just stick them in the ground. I'm going to check this out.

Thanks ROn!!!

Another project to jump into. I have tried table grapes and just dont have a green thump for them-- honestly I need plants that thrive with a litttl neglect and cultivated grapes have not survived here. THe wild concord type grape is everywhere in our closed canopy woods. We try to protect many of the vines as it is good for the wild birds. Usually the fruit is 20 feet up and not accessable for us. Now I can change that!! Whoot.

I thought I bought some grapes and planted them only to find they were muscadines. We don't care for muscadines, and the guy at the nursery told me that grapes have a very short life span here only 3-4 years but I still cannot find any here. So I guess we will just have to buy them at the grocery store.. lol

WOw that is interestng-- I think of AL and TN as areas that can grow anything. 3-4 years is very short for a grape.

We picked a gal of concord grapes andput them in the freezer until we had time-- I though I had fet them out ot he chooks , but I can still smell the grapes in the freezer-- must be another bag hiding!!

When I was a teen we picked grapes here in MAss and that was my first experienc making grape jam; in Maine the grapes dont grow at all, so no opportunities there. THough we did make a lot of chokecherry jam in Maine.

Which leads me to-- we have 2 types of cherry trees here. Generally cherries are an issue for live stock IF they eat wilted leaves, and eat enough of them; but the chokecherries are more bush like and have very bitter fruit until well ripened. THe taste test always works for that. Again hgh in that cancer fighting factor that I am striving for.

That is what I thought also so I really just decided to forget the grapes. lol I do love them but I can buy them at the grocery store.
My DH loves cherry's that is why we bought the cherry bushes from eburgess. I soaked them over night in water with root hormone to give them a jump start.
why do the cherry leaves cause a problem with livestock?

You know, call me cynical but it sounds like he wants you to buy something more. I don't know of ANY type of tree or bush that only lasts 3-4 yrs. Even blueberries last for almost 20 yrs. I'd get a second opinion for your area.
