How to Grow a Blueberry Bush

I just got 3 blueberry plants, 2 just labelled Rabbit-Eye and the other is Brightwell. I assume since they came from the same nursery that the R-E ones are the originals, since B is a cultivar of
R-E?

They are very healthy looking plants with flowers and early fruit on all. 1 gallon pots and 18-24" tall.

I wondered if I might try just repotting in 5 gallon buckets and wait til the fall to move them to their permanent in ground location? Or might be able to just leave them in their current containers til fall?

Or is this a dumb idea and should get out the shovel?

Any opines?

I'm not familiar with the tamed versions, so I have nothing to contribute, but I would't mid a picture of your new bushes

Here's pic…that yellow stuff on deck is some of the infamous GA pine pollen. Funny we have no pine trees on our property, but the stuff blows for miles.

The Rabbi-Eye Blueberry is a native of Georgia, but I bet the wild ones are different than greenhouse raised ones.

2 on left were labelled Vaccinium ashei and 1 on right was labelled Vaccinium 'Brightwell'.

Yeah, we get a lot of that pollen too...

Those look so weird, even at that point they're a lot taller than the wild blueberries we have here. I hope you get loads of delicious berries.

@vehve Thanks. These get 8' x 8' when grown. Trying to decide where to plant them and hoped someone would say just put in larger pots for now :(

When I purchased my blueberry bushes 2 years ago I was told they could stay in the 3 gallon pot for a couple of years, it wouldn`t hurt them. My Colorado Blue Spruce tree has been in its same pot going on 3 years this Christmas(yes it is our Christmas tree 4' tall). So I would say you could wait to plant them, maybe even tillnext spring, or put them in 5 gallon pots for a couple of years just make sure rootsvhave room to grow and it has holes in the bottom.

Rabbit Eye is a southern variety. I'm not sure if it's related to our northern blueberries. But, they do well in the southern climates, where our northern blueberries would not. Rabbit Eyes won't grow up here either.
