How to Grow a Blueberry Bush

@Arielle Move South. lol, Spring is here!

THanks but no thanks, lol, I"m as far south as I will go. THe summers are way too hot here now; 20 years ago when I moved here they were tolerable. If anything, I'll move north east ward . . .gotta be near the coast. lol

The snow are about gone now!!!

Need to check the garden area and might be able to get some peas in!!

We bought some berry plants some heritage red raspberry, boysenberry, dewberry, loganberry and a couple others I can't recall right now. I put them in pots for now out by the chicken pens so they will get watered. lol My two nankin cherry bushes have started coming out nicely and they are also in pots for now. Not sure if I am going to plant any vegies this year with being so busy with hatching turkey poults like crazy. That just has taken up so much time that I would have liked to spend planting and tending a garden so far.
I wish I was a little younger or had some kids around to help. lol

I hope you have great luck with all those lovely berry plants!!! Just do what you can do. I assure you much of my time is used up keeping the kids organized and giving them things to do. lol

Thank you I am very excited to see them coming out. That is how it used to be when my kids still lived at home.

I have 3 blueberry bushes. Two are new that I just planted this year and they survived the late freeze so I'm rather proud of them (and me!). I have a Tifblue, an Elliott and I can't remember the 3rd offhand. The Elliott is the oldest. I planted that last year and it was the only one that lived. Happily it is thriving. I need to get something else to go next to it where its "cousin" lived... I keep forgetting!

In terms of care, I used potting soil mixed with bunny poop to set them. I throw wood ash from the fireplace over the soil every so often to help w/ acidity, and I use Miracle Gro. Apart from that, keeping them watered is the main thing.

Good luck with yours!

I have a netting question. Found a blog that uses masonry ladders as a hoop for the raised beds, it measures at 16" wide and 26' long. I was thinking it would be a great idea for my blueberry bed, which is 6' by 6'. My question would be if I used bird netting and the masonry ladders would high winds blow it all away? I was hoping to just push it into the dirt and straping the net to the wire somehow. And for the math brainiacs out there, how tall would the hoop be if I used the ladders on it? I was hoping to use it as well on my strawberry bed as well which is 3'x6' long. We have alot of birds, and high winds, and I really dont want to lose my netting or berries; and maybe the netting will keep the cats out of the bare dirt.

Always a need to keep cats out!! lol I;m not familiar with masonry ladders, so not sure what this set up would look like. I did note that the local farm stand has all the netting rolled back and well secured for the winter. THe have a blueberry patch that is about 50 by 200 with tall posts all around and fencing attached. Sorry I"m no help. Wind will catch not catch on fencing with lots of holes to let the air through . . . .does the masonry ladder let thru air???

I googled masonry ladder and this popped up, I would like toput up the picture I found on a blog, from another blog but I think thats not allowed. But you stick one end in the dirt and it will curve like pvc does when you stick the other end in the dirt.

You can link to a blog. We cannot entice BYC members to a different poultry site.
