Observation--- I noticed the bushes about an hour northwest of here on a lake ripen at a different time than here. Perhaps a difference in variety, or its a lake effect. Certainly big and well filled out. Overall we have been low on rainfall this year.

Son was excited to tell me he found a spring-- in hopes that I had missed such a gold mine, I asked him to show me the location. Alass . . no just a break in the roots letting the runoff water squirt out!! Dang. I was so hoping he had found a spring of blue gold.

Very interesting thread. I learned a lot. I only have a few bushes that have been struggling to stay alive. Hopefully next year I will be able to revive them with all I have learned here. Thank you for all the info!

The root system is broad and shallow. Here in Georgia where blueberries are grown commercially they like pine bark or oak leaf mulch both are acidic and they hold moisture in the topsoil where the feeder roots are.

Stark Bro catalog was calling to me today. Loved the pictures and the descriptions. Catalogs are far better than the internet-- must be the papaer booklet factor.

Read up on the lingon berrries and NO mention of needing acidic soils. BUt the American cranberry do need acidic soils. DOnt ALL cranberries need acidic soils?? Or is lignon NOT a cranberry??

I dont have time right now to slueth thru the Stark on line info-- it is probably there that I will find the preferred pH of the soil for lignon berries.

They do love acidic soil according to google.com.

It's very different from cranberries though, here cranberries only grow in swamps and bogs. Lingonberries grow in similar places as blueberries, although they're a bit more cold hardy. They mature late.
