how to handle power outages with new hatched chicks (curious, NOT emergency)

I have a UPS (uninterrupted power source) the kind for computers and servers. My incubators are always connected to it, and in a power outtage I can add the heat plate to it and it still claims to last 6 hours. If I plugged in a light bulb it uses way more power than the heat plate. If my power is out for more than 6 hours in this 19 degree cold, I have bigger problems than just my chicks, since my heat needs electric to run, even though it’s gas heat.

You can also buy these things that are like portable jumper cables/ battery for the car, but some have a regular power outbound plug that you can plug something in, and you keep it charged and ready.

If you have a gas stove in your kitchen, you can heat rocks or something.

Another vote for hot hands! We’ve never used for chicks but we’ve use them for foster kittens for years. We just wrap them in a towel and keep an eye on the temp with a thermometer. Water for hot water bottles can also be heated in a pot on the grill or in a fire pit if you don’t have gas.

Depending on how many you have, you can also put an adult hen with them. If I was in dire straights, I have 3 hens and a roo who love adopting chicks, I would divide the chicks evenly between them and put them each in a small box or bin with their chicks and hope for the best.

I've had it happen but luckily only for short periods of time. I'm in the county so when power goes it's everything...electric and water. We intentionally have a gas stove rather than electric for that reason.

I've done the following. Warm some water on top the stove. Not boiling just warm and then fill either a gal or 2 lt and put them in so the chicks can use it to keep warm. May want to wrap a towel just in case it's too hot.

If you watch qvc they have a portable power pack, I think its called a Halo, that they sell every now and then that every time I see it I say I'm going to buy it an don't. When they air it on sale Its about $100. You can charge your car, phones, and supposedly run a light for 24 hours.

Its about the size of an old walkman radio if anyone remembers those from the 80's

I'm not sure this is the one that powers a lamp but this is what I'm talkng aobut.
