How to increase protein in scratch

You could always soak it and add tuna or scrambled egg I guess...dunno.
That would add protein.

I have added tuna and egg, I just don't know if I am adding too much or not enough. Any idea on how much to add to a lb of scratch?

Maybe it isn't such a big deal. Maybe I can just keep doing what I am doing and they will be fine. It's only a 35lb bag, in 2-4 meals a week ....

I could never figure exactly 10% of their daily diet when it came to treats. So my compromise to not give too much I based on time. If it wasn’t gone in 4-5 minutes then I’d pick it up and adjust the quantities from that, for next time. Now I’ve got the amount down pretty good.
It all depends on how many birds your feeding. I was a person who gave wayyy too many treats. Wet treats I put in bowls (yep mine are spoiled)
By the time I lay down the last bowl and turn around to pick up the first bowl it’s empty. A way you can tell if they are consuming too much protein (hard on their kidneys) is their poop will darken color. I give extra protein especially in winter (molt) but I keep an eye on their poops. Sardines are the worst for dark poo..lol

My 11 probably get about 2 cups of feed in the morning that is fermented (may not eat it all). Then on cold nights (maybe 4-5 nights a week) they get maybe 1 cup of feed with 4 eggs or a can of peas or 1.5 alfalfa cubes or a can of tuna (may not eat it all). Their favorite treats are bird seed (millet BOSS mix), meal worms and ground beef. I also grow fodder for them from wheat, the birdseed, lentils, and just recently barley. They free range usually about 3 hours 4-6 times a week. I don't know what they actually eat out there this time of year, but they scratch around busy, busy, busy! I did see one chicken get a big worm the other day. She was excited!

Mine are definitely pets. We have 4 dogs and a cat. But, still the chickens are pets. My 3 daughters could never eat any of the chickens. Even my husband wouldn't be able to do that. I think he went along with the whole "get some chickens" idea just because the rest of us wanted them. But now, he's really likes them. He watches them, gives them treats, holds them. He got bit by the chicken bug!

Hey, to each their own. They make me money so they’re useful. They also feed us.

Wow...ground beef? Mine don’t eat it. Peas? Nope.
Mine like fish & chicken with wild rice. :eek:On BBQ night I grill an extra breast for them. They especially like them marinated in sweet & sour. I’m pathetic :lau
My husband is like yours. He didn’t show much interest at first. Now he pouts if I take treats out without him. His favorite (she loves him) is my RSL...what a goof! She comes running and crying when he comes out...adorable both of them.
