thanks. we had an oegb roo a few years back. he wasn't quiet at all. we only had one hen at the time and for awhile 2 roosters. do roos typically crow less with more hens? right now we have 6
Stuffed mine into a cat crate and put him in the basement in the dark. Still went off at 7:30 am right on time. (saw the sunrise through a the basement window)
He crows... and crows.... and crows. I don't think he can help it. It's like a hiccup, or a sneeze- just happens. Almost looks like he startles himself.
So, I had to butcher him, and four others before him. Some are noisier than others, and you never know which one it will be.
Like I said, mine crows all day long, but its a tiny crow. Its true that you just don't know how loud they will be or how much tey will crow till you give them a chance. Might have to go throughna few until you find the riight one.I had to rehome 4 already, but now, Feisty is good. I would think more hens would be good, but not more roosters. The more roosters, the more they wiill be crowiing to tell the ladiies who the better man is.
my Dh says he has heard my BR crowing at 3 a.m.-ish as he's heading to work on early days.....but I'm not even at the point of "roll over and fart" til nine-ish, much less outside, lol. We never hear him crow unless we're outside, and the coop is fifty ft or so from our bedroom window. I used to live near some train tracks some yrs back, and after a while train whistles just became white noise. So a rooster...easy beasy!
when I was growing up, we had a very loud, all day long, all night long crower. When the neighbors started complaining my dad built a light-proof box to house him in over night-in the coop- it had breathing holes, and roost, but he could not stretch his neck up high to get that proud sound out. You could hear a little muffled one, but nothing anyone could hear unless you were standing right next to the box. He would let him out in the morning and he would "sing to his hearts content" then back in the box at dark- he never seemed to mind, and even went in on his own accord. If I ever have a pesty rooster again, I will try the same method.

Thanks! that sounds like a good idea. I have heard of doing this before but it sounded kinda nasty. If he went in on his own the that proves to the contrary. We have neigbors on either side. They both don't mind the sound and it never bothers them when our BR hen crows (they even both want chickens themselves). We have another neighbor that lives 2 houses away and he complains even though she doesn't let loose with her quiet squawky crow untill 7 or 8 in the morning. I can't hear her from my bedroom so its kinda strange. We have no laws against roosters, however we have a noise bylaw that says no unnecessary noise untill 7:00. Someone told me it doesn't include roosters though. My mom has no intention of getting rid of Pepper because she gives us large brown eggs. If we could get a rooster that crowed quietly at 7:00 to 8:00 then there wouldn't be a problem. My mom is convinced she won't buy a rooster so my last chance short of moving is this chicken which looks to me like a girl.
