when I was growing up, we had a very loud, all day long, all night long crower. When the neighbors started complaining my dad built a light-proof box to house him in over night-in the coop- it had breathing holes, and roost, but he could not stretch his neck up high to get that proud sound out. You could hear a little muffled one, but nothing anyone could hear unless you were standing right next to the box. He would let him out in the morning and he would "sing to his hearts content" then back in the box at dark- he never seemed to mind, and even went in on his own accord. If I ever have a pesty rooster again, I will try the same method.
