How to keep baby ducks brooder dry??????

700

This one is really old, but I know I reference old posts all the time. So many great ideas! I took a big tray (like the kind you get at a cafeteria) and covered it with hardware cloth. This way all the schnuffling would fall through ( and a good amount of the poop) for the first two or three weeks. It got to where we could not give them more water without dumping the tray each time. Still messy, of course, but kept the shavings drier. I also put a flat pan under the nipple waterer to keep it dryer, they manage to take showers under that. My Welsh Harlequins were almost full size after three weeks, so then I stopped feeding them at night, put them in an outdoor run during the day with shade (August in New Mexico, nice and warm outside) and let them just use a nipple waterer at night. As they got even bigger (how big is this breed supposed to be?!? They are 5 weeks old now and bigger than standard ducks - maybe I gave them too much protein when they were little?) I find I still have to remove all the shavings at least every three days, even if I add a new layer every night. They are fertilizer producing machines! I'll have a crazy garden next year!

And the person who replied in 2013 thought the thread was old it will just keep living lol

I tried the waterer in the we call them planting trays. They emptied a whole 5litres of water in half hour. It was such a mess. Flooded shed

I've since found a trough works better but they drink water faster than I can fill it . So I ordered a refillable pig trough for outside

I find feeding water and food in the same tub I mix it to a runny consistancy and they love that. Eat it straight away

I am using this and our 'brooder' is 2 uhaul boxes taped together with puppy pads in the bottom. The frisbee seems to help. We have 3 lil ducklings. I have to change everything twice a day, and give them water at least 4x day!

F1115BB8-D3AB-44E1-9831-566FD705A07A.jpeg Ik this thread is old but I finally got it!! I have a pretty basic set up. I buried the tray with chicken wire level with the shavings and used a small water dish for food so it doesn’t get everywhere. They only have one spot to get water from so when they splash it everywhere it only goes down the drain. I woke up the next morning and.... dry box!!!!!!!!! First time in the 11 days they’ve been alive!!!

Very clever, I like it!

I have 10 almost 3 week and 2 almost 2 week old ducks and was wondering how to set it up to keep it drier...... they are now in a x-lg dog cage and I have to totally empty it 1 to 2 times a day because the shavings are soaked from front to back! I figure there has to be an easier way. I am in the middle of cleaning their cage so I figure I would see if anyone had any ideas.
Hey there,

I know this is a super old post, but it helped me out so much to read what other people had said on the thread, so I appreciate everyone's comments very much.

I added a storage bucket today to help control moisture at least on one side of the brooder (rubbermaid 30 gal water trough). I cut two entrances with a sharp knife and heavy duty scissors. Hopefully this will keep their wood chips from getting saturated throughout the whole brooder.

Given time and space I would opt for an old bathtub as the brooder, and place their water on the drain side of the tub.

Once again, thanks to everyone for the information. My ducks and I appreciate it!
