i have 12 chickens and they get hot in the summer heat
i give them fresh water and they have lots of shade is there anything i can
do to keep them cool

freeze fruits like peaches in a large freezer bag until completely frozen then dump the entire bag in a bowl or dollar tree oil pan so when it starts to thaw they can eat it. I do that for mine and they pick at it all day long. I also do their favorite veggies that are freezer safe. Squash and green beans. I will toss out apple halves that I store in the fridge in water to prevent from browning.

Haha thanks Caleb!

All joking aside, if they have plenty of shade and are getting cool, fresh, clean water than they should be able to regulate pretty well. Unless you live inside of a volcano that-is...

Arizona high temperatures 100 to 114 degrees. I went to Lowes and bought a simple mister system for $18. and installed around the top edge of my coop and my 5 lady chickens love it. It will lower temperature enough to stop the open mouth "I'm seriously tooooo hot" chicken look.

I put a pan in pen during the summer that they can step in if they wish. 20170614_164730.jpg I refill several times daily with cold water on really hot days. I hang my hose on the fence and set it to mist. 20170612_172828.jpg I run a fan in the coop on warm nights, 20170619_090443.jpg blowing air under roosts. GC

All last week we had 105+ degree weather in central ca. I did give frozen treats along with frozen water bottles, a small fan, and sprinklers (I was surprised they enjoyed them). they loved the water bottles (anything frozen) rotating on them all day long... cheap dollar store "freeze packs" worked great too as they seamed to cool quicker and freeze faster than water bottles coming in from 100*+ weather. Temps hung around 110 for almost a week straight and I only suffered a couple eggs not being laid.

Open mouth panting. Ayi Yai Yai! They are telling me they are stupid hot like I get with hot flashes. Good idea about mister. Gotta get one for my girls.
