How to keep Hawks away??

We have several species of hawks here, and both large and bantam chickens. Over the years we've had an occasional bird taken, usually a young bantam. I do have a safe run for the birds, and lock them in for a few weeks if a bird is lost. Last year a Coopers Hawk moved in; he sat outside the run for 10 days or so. I kept the birds in lockdown for 8 weeks, and haven't seen him since. I have trees and shrubs and othe cover for the birds, and they are pretty watchful, especially the roosters. Free range is always a risk, but at times lockdown must happen. No hawks are shot here! mary

In the past year I've had several birds of prey eyeballing the girls. I've handled every instance the same way. I make a sharp loud noise and the bird of prey flies away. It might not be possible, but if you can make a sharp loud noise of some kind, I have no reason to believe the results would be any different where you live. How you make that noise is up to you. Smack two pieces of wood together if you have to, but I think the bird of prey will get the hint. If you still have a problem, then looking into the legal way to eliminate the bird of prey might not be out of the question. Good Luck!!

I'm not the only one that runs around the yard hootin' and hollerin'?! I think the neighbors think I'm crazy, but if I see a hawk circling over my yard, I have no problem with running around making as much noise until it goes away. These give up quickly. I've free ranged my chickens for 4 years and haven't ever lost one to a hawk. KNOCK ON WOOD

I had a black silkier rooster that actually attacked a hath as it came in to get our chicks once. He flipped over and caught it in flight then began to pluck it's heat bald. The second time he did it I named him warf. The australorp roo helped him with the second go round and they actually hurt it. Now when our roosters call alarm the Hawks leave.

HaHaHa!! Yeah, I've been guilty of yelling at hawks, eagles, and owls too. However, I only yell once or twice before I get serious. My favorite "Noise Maker" and I can make quite a racket when given the proper motivation. It seems to convince the aerial predators to look for locations elsewhere without hurting them.

Glad I read all this as I didn't realize that a hawk could actually lift a grown duck. We have hawks flying constantly around here, probably sizing up our Pugs. They never bothered our Pekins that free ranged, however. Now we have a few Bantam chicks and I'm sure that free ranging them when they are older will be risky.
