How to keep them Dry?

Did you stick your hand under the feathers next to their skin?
First time my birds looked like 'drowned rats' on the roost after a rainy day I found they were dry and warm at the skin level and never worried about it again.

I did not because I was soaking wet after having to chase the two brahmas around to get them inside-stubborn stubborn birds

This is why mine do not go out in inclement weather.

Mine don’t mind being out in the rain. They stay dry at the skin level and they dry off relatively quickly. Mine also love the snow. They go out after a snow storm and spend the entire day scratching and eating the snow they love it when I come into the coop with snow on my boots. That’s one of their favorite treats

Yeah, that would make it hard to tell...plus you don't have a walk in coop so hard to reach them while not standing in the rain yourself.

Chickens are at least as good a weathermen as those bozos on the boob tube. If it isn't going to rain all day or most of the rest of the day your chickens will take shelter, but if an all day drizzle in in the cards then your chickens will brave the rain.

This is also a good reason to avoid washing your hens in Dawn or other detergents. Chickens preen their feathers and in doing so they apply oil from the gland at the root of their tail. Detergents remove oil and grease which is why we use detergents on our dinner dishes. A recently bathed hen is defenseless when it comes to rainy weather.
