Beet pulp, to my thinking, wouldn't be high in fat, but high in sugar (carbs) and fiber.
Alfalfa makes more sense to me as a "filler" supplement. It's higher in protein than beet pulp--more useful nutritional value.
My girls love it.
I make a mix. I use equal parts flock raiser, scratch feed then a smaller bag of BOSS and wild bird seed and some whole deer corn kernels. Plus, they free range during the day. Seems to last forever.
Today I purchased 2 50 lb bags of 16% for under $9.00. When I first started, I was going to a local farm supply chain and paying way too much. Also, the bags at the farm store are 40 lbs and the bags from the feed mill are 50 lbs. My husband and I are keeping our eyes out for a small bin to store feed in bulk. I always watch for corn prices to drop before I go to the feed mill.
I've got 22 geese, 7 ducks and about 250 chickens. Hope to get down to about 100 chickens.
That's easy. Send them to me.
I pay a small fortune for feed and I live where most is grown. Then again our produce is higher here than is was when I didn't live in the middle of the Ag areas. Crazy!
If you don't mind my butting in, the alfalfa pellets, you just soak them and give them the mash separate from the feed? My chickens don't eat alot of food, they are all on Payback all purpose because of difference in ages, with grit and oyster on the side, would like $ and feed to go farther. I have 20 chickens between 2 pens, its been cold and wet here, well, you know that, I guess. Just wouldnt mind giving them something to keep them happy and healthy. I notice they eat my goats orchard grass, but it scares me because it is really long pieces. I have to run along for a while, but hopefully this discussion will continue. Thanks and have a great Turkey Day!
I give scratch grains and we have alfalfa bales available where we are, but thatis going up too, since they can make more money hauling to the Front Range and south to TX & OK where there is a BIG drought.
With gasoline going up we will have to get even more creative with what we feed or grow our own.
I also free range, but this is the wrong time of year for them finding much. They still go fo the gusto, tho, when they have an open gate!!!!
We normally free range as well but we have snow on the ground now. I am planning on planting some mangle beets this spring, I hear they make good livestock feed, the chickens will pick at them. I saw 40# deer corn at Walmart for $6 but it seemed a little big for some of the birds.
