How to make store bought grass safe

I bought a patch of st Augustine grass for the girls at Home Depot. After I got home I noticed it said not for animal consumption. Is there a way to make the grass safe or should I just return it?

I took it away from them and everything seemed to be fine. Now I buy them cat grass at the pet store as a treat!
