How to nicely euthenize a chick?

Quote:
This is the method I use.

I believe the most humane and fastest way to euthanize a chick is to do some sort of cervical dislocation as they will instantly be "disconnected." Won't have to smell fumes, feel cold, or effectively run out of oxygen.

Purple Chicken is 100% right. Miss Prissy too. It's hard (emotionally) to do, but it's the most humane and effective way. Fumes are unreliable (I've read several posts about that method failing) and freezing is uncomfortable and comparatively slow. A sharp knife (with a quick, steady hand) is a certainty, and, really, a kindness to the little one. The way to prepare is to put its interests first, your own feelings aside, and don't delay.

Oops, posted just after Silkiechicken. Ditto.

Good luck, whatever you choose.

Hi, im sorry that you have this awful task to do.
I cant bring myself to read all the posts but i will suggest that you get a trustworthy friend to do it for you.
I have friends in the chicken business here who are tough men, however when they need to eauthanise, they get each other to do it for them.
Peace be with you.

oh my goodness!

Nothing against any of you... but I've never needed to put a chicken down... and I hope I never will because the ways some do it just sound inhumane.

I'm sorry if I sounded rude, but wow...
I mean I know everyone on this forum loves their birds, but I could never do something like the way some of you guys explained it...wow...:|

You are lucky. When you have a chicken who's skull has been ripped open and
is suffering or a chick that just sits, peeps, and is dying you may have no choice.
I can post a pic but I won't do it here.

I'm not thrilled with some of the ways mentioned here either. From what I understand
of biology any type of oxygen deprivation is not a comfortable thing.

I do sympathize with someone's resistance to use a knife or scissors. It's not an
enjoyable thing and a sensitive person will have a hard time with it. I did.

Just remember. You are doing it for the chicken, not you.
How often is doing the right thing easy????

Wow PC.
No, I havent had to euthenize one yet...
but I'm sure the day will come... and that's when I'll really know what you guys are talking about.
I wasnt putting any of you down, but I've been an animal "freak", if you will, because I have a huge love for all animals. Just, thinking of cutting the head off of one of my birds and picturing it isnt a very good thought... or image. I know nobody here enjoys doing it, and I know that you are ending it fast for your chicken, but I want to burry my chicken in one piece. That's just me though. And I completely understand you don't want your bird to suffer, and you know that it's going to die, and you dont want it to die with any pain... just the method you guys have mention sort of disturbs me.
And once again I'm not putting any of you guys down, and I'm not being rude.

Actually, CO2 is something all of us already breathe. It's not ether or starter fluid. It is used as an anesthetic, as well.

One could also argue about beheading. No point in it, though, is there? It's good to know a wide spectrum of methods, because each person has different strengths and abilities. So we all have to choose what we're capable of doing. Just MHO.
