How to obtain the mix of breeds I want in small numbers..*Follow up ?*

I'm not sure what you mean by a lady selling broody hens - maybe you could clarify and get some more answers to that question. (which I'm now interested in) She sells the hens she has right when they become broody? She sells hens that she knows go broody frequently? I'm new and don't know anything about how that would work, but from what I've ready about broody hens, I don't know if they would be agreeable to being moved and still be broody once they were in a new place.

Also, do you have any "chicken stocks" going on anytime soon in your area? There you might be able to find one of each of what you want. I got my three from a pet store (but ended up with one being the wrong breed), and the other two are coming from a guy I found on Craig's list who hatched out a bunch of eggs of different breeds and is only keeping a small flock for himself.

This is the craigslist add for the broody hens. I've never used hens to hatch before, which is why I was asking if this would work

I have a lot of the same questions about the logisitcs as you do.

I appreciate the offer, but I have 2 small kiddos that would think of that drive as a form of torture

If you don't want to go with MyPetChicken (I don't think they have olive eggers?) You could post a Want to Buy and in that section of BYC....or on Craigslist. Somebody is bound to have all those in their flock (I do, except for the olive eggers, and I will next year if I want). Or, you could start out with 1 or two of the ones you want....an orpington shouldn't be hard to find and they make good broodys/mothers. Then next year when she goes broody in the spring, buy some fertile eggs for the rest of what you want and let her raise them. You can always get rid of the roos and extras before anybody is the wiser (they don't start crowing for awhile).

Good luck!

Have you looked at Nature's hatchery. It is out of Napierville, Illinois and carries something like 400 breeds. I ordered from them this year and I am completely in love with all my chicks. The other benefit to you is that they aren't that far away (this is part of why I bought from them) the chicks would have a shorter commute, ergo they'd be less stressed.

Good...hope it works for you. Don't give up on getting the birds you really want! You'll just get attached to the ones you settled for and will regret not holding out for the others. There is at least one positive to having a bird # limit...you can't get carried away like me (9 ducks, 52 chickens and counting....).
