wow that's a great idea. just read all about it. the only problem i have is that i have been hands off with my roos so catching them and getting a sock around their necks is going to be a huge challenge. i'm going to monitor this to see how things go for them. i have recently enclosed my coop to that i can put them all up at night. i don't let them out until around 730 on the weekdays and 9 on the weekends. both my roos are crowing up a storm. my neighbors are okay with it for now but i'm so sensitive to the noise i don't want to upset the apple cart.

Have you read the last few pages? There is some kind of velcro that can be added to a piece of sock and maybe double wide. Cheaper than $14 that the ordered one is. I heard it works better also. We'll see. I want to keep my roosters (when I get them) for breeding. I'm getting upwards of 20 or more because I'm going to learn caponizing. But I'm saving a few. Big plans, big plans

We gained a rooster from a friend who didn't want roosters. His daddy is a barred rock and momma is a red sex link. He is now 6 mos old and doesn't crow. Is that normal? Also I'm concerned about him pulling feathers from a couple of my hens. These 2 hens try to hide from him and sometimes will go in the coop to keep away from him. The other hens fight him off and defend them when they are around. Our birds have 10 acres to free range and are cooped up at night. Any suggestions? Should I be concerned about my hens? Time for a free range chicken dinner?

If a Rooster is being mean to your hens get RID of him. No ladies deserved to be bullied. some of them are just MEAN. I just got rehomed a RIR. He was vicious and made their living conditions not nice. Bye bye. I am enjoying not having to defend myself when around caring for my chickens and letting them free range in my 1/3 acre fenced yard.

Thank you for this thread, I have wondering when or if my 4 month old Roo might 'turn' now I know that being the biggest man (even thou I am a women) about the pen is the best thing for our relationship.

Have been reading your post. Thanks for the information. So far it looks like I've been doing everything wrong. Is it ok for me to keep my Rooster in the coop with the hens at night for protection, or should I separate him? He's still pretty young (3 months) and not too aggressive yet.

Hi all just having a few rooster issues so I'm pleased to find this thread

I have a young 5 month d silver laced orpington rooster. He's such a handsome bird and he crows so well. He's fearful and friendly with all humans and takes a good few pecks from the set hens, but I have 2 broodies that have just returned to the flick with their chicks and he's intent on killing one of them! She's at the bottom of the pecking order and is also harassed by the head hen but he's not pecking her he's going for her throat! Not sure what to do!? Or why he would go for just one hen like this? thanks for any help

In my opinion your young roo is still at the bottom of the pecking order himself and he is making his first feeble attempts to become the flock leader. Chickens don't try to kill one another by pecking at each others neck, they go for the head and eyes.

That is a pretty bird Jakoda! We recently put down a rooster we rescued. He had just gotten so mean & my son could not go outside to play. We are on a quest to find the perfect Ameracauna rooster who protects the hens without attacking us.
