I think it depends on the area, what your vet costs are. Here, farm vets wouldn't touch a chicken. Our regular vet, for our cats and dogs, is no where near that expensive, and he is a farm vet, but if you mention the word chicken to him he won't even look at you. The vet we take the chickens to is an exotic pets and avian vet, and so I imagine he justifies that as a reason to charge more. We once took our hamster to him....
