how to remove a screw form rooster's throat

Kudos to your wife! I'm curious . . . does it seem to most people that vets are more willing to give up on chickens? I'd certainly send the screw to the vet, just to say "nyah nyah," but don't hold your breath waiting for the money he stole (yes, I believe what he charged you was outright theft, especially considering he didn't actually do anything helpful).

Oh, and what kind of magnets did she used? Ever since reading this post, I'm terrified there may be some screws out there, waiting to lodge in my chickens.

Wonderful solution to a tricky problem (and I suspect if this was an expensive parrot then the vet would have been willing/suggested a surgery but then we are talking big bucks>>>obviously the vet had not thought of this either)
I am curious though on the particulars (if you dont mind me asking)... did you all know there was a screw in his throat when you brought him to the vet (in other words did you take him to the vet with the request to remove it?)
or
Did you notice something was wrong and took to vet to find out the problem and the vet discovered the screw through a radiograph /xray?

We had no idea what was wrong with the roo, other than he was having a hard time breathing and couldn't crow. My wife called all over trying to find a vet open and willing to look at him. She finally found one and he took an x-ray and found the screw. He told her nothing could be done the him, other than to have him for dinner. She used the magnets out of some old speakers I had in the shop. They are pretty strong, but she was able to work the screw up to where she could reach it with twezzers. She won't tell me his name for fear of what I might do or say to him. So I will just wait for the check to come in and find out his name. He will get a piece of my mind.

Well, no offense, but it sounds to me like you got your money's worth from having the vet do the xray. Without it you would not have known what the problem was and your wife would have never had the *opportunity* to come up with the brilliant idea of using magnets.

Seeing as how removing a screw from a rooster's throat is not exactly a standard veterinary procedure like neutering, I can understand how a vet might not hit on your wife's clever inspiration. You wanted an xray, he did an xray... you know? IME that is pretty much the usual going rate, too, for one or two plates plus a basic exam. <shrug>

BTW is your wife by any chance a pediatric nurse? The pediatric nurses I've known seem to be the most resourceful type, from having to think up ways to get beans out of ears and all the other crazy bizarre things kids do. Anyhow she is one smart cookie

Just genious! I love it! I have to disagree about the x-ray charges...2 angles cost me $49.50 for just the x-rs and then the visit was $39.50 (expensive for here) just last Thursday...so it should have been atleast under a hundred dollars...IMO. Is this some Champion roo or something? Or just your wife loves him? I couldn't see doing it, but then again I do have an atleast $8k dog limping around my house right now....

Unbelievable story! Kudo's to the wife. FYI: Did you know on Dairy Farms they insert a magnet into the cow's 1st stomache, because cows will eat everything. Wire, nails, screws attach themselves to the magnet and then don't interfere with the rest of the digestion process.

Sounds like you take pretty good care of him, I'm sure he will make a full recovery!

Boy, I can sympathize with you there!!!! I know the vet thinks WE have a screw loose when he sees us coming...it isn't too often. Last time we went, I intended to pay $35.00 to have our hen euthanized, ended up paying $99.50 to try and save her...she died next day. And we paid 175.00 a few years ago for our roo, who did make a full recovery. Your wife is awesome.
