How To Scare The Be-Jesus Out of Your Chickens!

I wondered about that. If it gets mixed in with the dirt, will it still cause problems? What about spraying it down with water? I figure on scooping out the coop in a few months and refilling it with sand, then more sawdust, if this works.

I would not spray it with water. You want to keep things dry or it will stink. It sounds to me that if they have worked it into the dirt that it should be fine. That's just a guess. If it doesn't seem overly dusty to you, it's probably fine, I would imagine.

My husband put one of our son's jack o lantern in the run on Nov 1st. He just set it in there and they all went into hysterics! Bouncing off the walls and ceiling in the run, they would not leave the coop until my husband broke it up. He broke the large pumpkin into 2 or 3 pieces and they chowed down.

Yep. There's something about those big black trash bags. I have a neighbor who has this bizarre tree where the leaves turn brown in the fall but they don't drop till March. So she'll rake up a few bags for me and I'll dump them into the hens run to give them something to kick around. But I go in there with that bag and they all just FREAK! until the leaves are out and the bag is gone.

Soooooo you're saying a black plastic garbage bag for a costume would be a bad idea at a chicken party??

Yep, that's it. Such silly girls. I had them out in the big garden on Saturday and someone was using a leaf blower and that was FREAKING them out. Go figure.

Sometimes you just never know what will absolutely mortify them....then again, if you'd stop making your chicken coop floor HOT LAVA, they'd probably calm down.

One chilly afternoon I went outside in a bright red jacket they'd never seen before and a black ear warmer. Chickens FREAKED OUT! I thought it was the coat, being it was new to them and blazing red, but switching coats didn't help. It was the ear warmer. As soon as I removed that they were all like, "OH, it's just you." and went about their business. When I put it back on, more freaking....chickens obviously hate my ears being warm.

1. Rugs, I had mine out free ranging the other day. Was doing a little house cleaning, took a rug out and shook it, sent chickens running, flying and hiding in every possible direction. Took me a second to realize I was the one who cause the panic. I truely thought a hawk was coming for chicken dinner.

2. Feed bags. They see me coming from clear across the yard with one on my shoulder ans it's Katy bar the door. FREAK OUT.

3. AND just yesterday. Took some table scraps out in a plastic bowl. Dumped the scraps and set the bowl on the table on the chicken patio. Went and got the eggs and then when I went to get the bowl I bumped the table sending the bowl to the ground. You would have thought a fox just jumped out of the bushes.

This brings back memories! I had a young Blue Ameraucana cockerel that LOVED the handsome fellow in the mirror. He spent hours trying to convince the guy on the other side to come join him!!!!!!
