How to send your farmer to jail Update on Tester Amendment Post 239

Just like kids eating candy. Doesn't mean it is good for them in huge quantity over the long haul.

Cattle are no different than we are....different food sources in moderation for a healthy body.

I have to say I agree with seedcorn in that any grass fed beef I've ever had (both our own steer and another producer's) was pretty tough and not that good. We tried it one time and decided we'd wasted a whole animal. I too will take my nice tender grain-fed steak.

My cows never have never known moderation when they got out into a field they shouldn't be in.

You bet, the problem with this bill and all others as you pointed out is the legal speak that allows for many weasel clauses when interpreted the right way. All to often it is used to limit choice which burns me up.

The consumer can't name their price, but I honestly believe a few less middle men need to be in the system and allow the producer to actually name a better and more realistic price.

In a way the consumer does name the price as they quit buying when it's more than they want to pay. There would be a huge swing in AG to what several on this site propose if they would pay for it so that the farmer could produce it (& make a standard living).

Having read the actual text of the bill, I can safely say that - despite what Ivan3 may think about our government nobly following their own guidelines - we are screwed. They're not going to follow obscure 2002 regulations anymore than they'll follow prominent 1789 regulations. Since when does the United States government follow ANY laws? It just declares an emergency and BAM! Remember Lincoln and his 13,000+ political prisoners who were arrested with no trial or charges? Remember FDR and his unilateral imprisonment of thousands of Japanese Americans for no good reason?

Ours either!!

I just meant that I don't think it's detrimental to feed some amount of grain to cattle along with pasture and hay.

If it was, the deer pop in Indiana wouldn't be exploding. Is that why we're getting more twins because of GMO crops they are eating???

"The bill would increase the FDA's regulatory authority over the food production system in order to prevent contamination and food-borne illness outbreaks. It would give the FDA mandatory recall authority, require food producers to have qualifying plans in place for identifying and addressing safety risks, and requires importers to verify the safety of all imported foods."

OH I'd rather run the risk of e-coli or salmonilla then trust the government after all the egg producers have to make a buck too.

Hah. Haven't you figured out that the FDA doesn't give a rat's hindquarters about you? They don't care about any of us. They're bad at their job, and I would rather trust a company's sense of self-preservation rather than a bureaucrat who couldn't care less about my health.

Tell me, who has done more damage since 1789? "Evil" companies, or our "good" government?

Q

I really wish the big producers would police themselves. It would make it a lot cheaper. Unfortunately greed has gotten in the way of self preservation too many times. do you really think that egg producer that got cited numerous times for health concerns would voluntarily do what is needed to be sure his eggs don't have salmonella? Obviously not, since he wouldn't even do it knowing the FDA might fine him.

I sure wouldn't bet my health on a companies so called since of self preservation. I worked for a company for 7 years and bought a franchise through them. They had 800 stores across the country. They were privately operated. They decided to go public in 1993. The CEO, President and 4 VP's divided the take from the sale of stocks amongst themselves. One year later they filed bankruptcy. I was intimately involved with that company and knew the CEO well. They made terrible mistakes in their spending. When they saw the company was failing they decided to sell it off.

For those who don't know their history, w/out government we have no child labor laws, no safety standards, no environmental laws, no recourse if a company damages you. No one appreciates government or it's officials until you need them. Without government there would be more contaminated food than anyone would care to think about.

After taking shower (hate defending those I don't respect), many that are in DC and all state capitals are not even as moral as a pimp or drug dealer.

The egg producer in Iowa has a tremendous rep--none good. It's always interesting who this board will hold up as the standard.............
