How to sex a chick

You will need to wait until they age a bit for good sexing of chicks. Pullets can feather out faster than cockerels, cockerels will grow thicker legs and their combs and wattles will grow in faster and redden.

You can also post pics in our What Gender section here on BYC when they get older.

Welcome to BYC and enjoy your new babies!

Another way to sex them is called "vent-sexing". A hard-to-master skill that takes LOTS of practice but the people that can do it do so successfully and make quite a bit of money by traveling to different hatcheries and sexing the newly hatched chicks.
I have tried MULTIPLE times but, have not been successful but, don't let my failure discourage you because "practice makes perfect".
It is easier to see the different organs in adult birds as they are larger but, adult birds will struggle more and therefore are sometimes more difficult to handle.
The easiest way (although you have to wait a while) are the observations that "TwoCrows" mentioned.
Good luck!

Welcome to BYC. The secondary sex characteristics that Fred, Kelsie, and Twocrows have mentioned will appear as the chicks mature, and then of course there's the crowing. Good luck with your chicks.
