Hmmm. Interesting. 4 and 5 are same breed and I was thinking given that 4 has almost no comb dev and 5 has big comb dev that it would be 5 that was roo.

I purposely ordered a roo online. So I read up more on the subject and by 4 weeks I should be able to tell which one the roo is. But if the comb isn't the size of a 10 week old pullet and very red, it's probably not a roo. #5 does look a lot like a roo, but you should be able to find out very soon!

I have a roo I think that has BIG comb at 6 weeks, while my others looked around the same as yours-that's why I said maybe since the comb isn't that red. my questionable roo has a darker comb than the others. #5 looks like coloring of female to me. I am only going off of what others on here ( the old timers

) have told me to look for. But I still post pics every 2 weeks just to see

Hi everyone! It has been a bit since I have been on - school started. My original three chicks are now three months. My brown mixed chick has a red comb and green iridescent tail feathers coming in so I think it is a roo. My grey chick is a beautiful hen - most likely a cochin mix. My full Bantam Mille Fleur is a roo also I think. It is just beginning to get green iridescent tail feathers coming in and has a red comb coming in.

My 12 chicks which are now 2 and a half months are doing great and everyone, even my 1 year old hen has merged nicely into one large group. Everyone is free ranging when we are home. All go back into the coop independently.

Out of my 12 chicks I ordered a Blue Andalusian which I think might be a roo. It has a comb coming in and a large tail developing. One tail feather is just starting to curve downwards. Sorry I didn't take a pic. So no that is possible Three roo's. Yikes.

I am having a blast though with them. They are so much fun.

Don't know if anyone has said this. U can lay them on there back if they stop moving its a hen if they keep moving its a roo.

What age can you do this till?

I raise blue black splash English Orpingtons and have a method which has proven to be VERY reliable. At exactly one week old, I look at their fuzzy butts. The boys have nice rounded fuzzy butts still covered in down and the girls have tail feather spouts. I throw a pink or a blue zip tie around their feet and sure enough I am right about 90 to 95 % of the time. Once that one week mark passes, it is impossible to tell... At that point you need to wait for combs and wattles.

How old do you think these Australorp chicks are? They are females.

Basic indications such as early comb/wattles wattles, and feathering speed. Other then that there is no way of sexing them other then vent sexing or breed specific sexing.
