I am not using deep shavings, only about 2 in. Is there an easy way to sift poop out?

no. refresh the shavings every so often. if you let the old ones sit, your chicks may be allergic to dust so they will start sneezing. If you wish to keep it cleaned longer however, I suggest buying a poop-scoop.

Ok, good, I am a clean freak so I'll change them often, thanks.

If you're a clean freak, you might consider using sand in the coop......
...or spending a lot of moeny changing out shavings every other day or how ever often your sensibilities find it necessary.

......or at least use a poop board with sand/PDZ under the roosts.

...or maybe not have chickens at all because they create a lot of poop and a lot of dust.

Deep litter method works well for us.
The coop and the birds smell fresh. Change it out twice per year with a disinfectant scrub down.
I am a clean freak in my home but when it comes to my coop--- poop wins.
It's inevitable.

I haven't decided yet but I like the sand tray idea. I only have 6 poopers and as of today they have a big run, so less poop! I have learned so many things on here, thanks.

Deep litter works very well in the run too...better IMO...and it doesn't need to be that deep...just good mix of dried plant materials will do the trick.

Here's a great description of contents and how to manage organic 'bedding' in a run or coop...and there's a great video of what it looks like.
