How to stop ascites fluid drip after draining? Anything that can be applied to the site safely?

The leaking did end up speeding up, I think because she was lying down and that was putting pressure on it. Also probably because she just had so much in her. She leaked a lot more than I wanted, but she did stop after about 3 hours and didn't quite leak it all out. The smaller needle might work better if I drain her sooner rather than later. Or it might not. It was worth a try, though.

She did end up feeling really icky afterwards, but she's more perked up this morning/afternoon. She finally managed a small poop and is nibbling on various treats like hard boiled egg. Appetite isn't the best but she's very passionate about the egg and tomato. Very alert. I think she'll bounce back just fine. I did make sure to bring her inside and been keeping a space heater nearby for extra warmth. Has electrolytes in her water, too.

Biggest concern is she's still having trouble using her left leg. So I'll be giving her massages and therapy to help out with that.

It does sound like this went a little better than the previous draining. Good move on giving the electrolytes.

Eating is promising. Hopefully with massages to the leg and getting her to move about, her mobility will improve too.

You are doing a wonderful job taking care of her.

I'm sad to say Marcy passed away a short time ago. She had a very sudden decline overnight. Just last night before bed, she was happily ravaging some tomato I gave her. Very alert, active, eager for treats, and also eating her good food and drinking. She certainly wasn't eating or drinking as much as she should've been, but her poop had gone from being green and thick with urates to being normal brown with lighter urates (still slightly dehydrated, but we were working on that).

This morning, I woke up to her being vaguely responsive. Complete loss of interest in food and water. Comb purple, fallen over, labored breathing. I tried to revitalize her as much as I could, but she would barely move and quickly became extremely lethargic. She was obviously on her way out. It's 62F outside so I set her up on the porch with the space heater, bundled up in warm towels and protected from being picked on but able to lay and listen and see her flock mates. When I last went to check on her as I have been every 10-15 minutes, I saw her starting to lay her head down, and her feathers on her neck raising, so I sat with her talking to her and stroking her face as she passed away.

I suppose whatever was ailing her caught up to her finally. Thank you for all the support and hearing her story and helping her. I feel relieved she didn't seem to suffer too much. Her last days were much better than Cleo's last days. At least I don't hate myself for draining her on Thursday. Friday and Saturday were pretty decent days for her and she was doing really good besides not being able to use her one leg.

RIP my sweet little girl. My avatar picture is actually her as a little chick.

I first brought her home February 10, 2023. So she's around 2 years 10 months. I had really hoped she could make it to next year. Oddly enough, she didn't molt until back in August. She hasn't laid any eggs since really early spring, so she's been dealing with whatever is wrong for some months now and has been an amazing trooper through it all. You wouldn't've known she was ill at all.

She was the only RIR I got, and I brought her home with 6 Crevecoeurs. I like to name my chickens off of cartoon characters. Marcy is actually named Marceline after Adventure Time's Marceline the Vampire Queen and a nicknamed Marcy because the chicks were all watching Amphibia at the time. I raised them watching cartoons, haha. I actually had some cartoons on for Marcy for her the past couple days while she was inside since it's what they know.

Marcy has always been a very sweet chicken with a very gentle temperament.

Like my passed hen, Cleo, Marcy was also one of the few chicks to happily sleep while roosting on me. Though she was less affectionate with me when she was older, she was always so well-behaved and friendly. I never had trouble scooping her up if I needed to.
