I bought a hanging rabbit waterer today because the chicks keep running through their water and filling it with sand. How do I get the chicks to start using their new water source?
Just hang it in the cage. It is a natural instinct for chicks to peck at anything shiney, like the tip of a metal waterer nosel. If you are really worried you can put their water dish near or under the nipple for a couple of days.
i jsut put each lil chicks beak on it like i do the regular waterer. I also use a wire around the bottle and twist it to make it drip very very slowly for the first day, so just in case i have any slow learners. sometimes, I just put marbles in the regular waterer and put it on top of a rubbermaid lid to elevate it. I keep my chicks in a big rubbermaid container with shavings.
put it near their waterer, loosen the cap slightly so it will drip more readily. Once one uses it, they all will. I've had standards, OEGs, Bantams, and Quail all on bottles
Tap the metal with your fingernail. They are attracted to the tapping noise. Once 1 figures it out the others will join in.
You'll be buying a 2nd larger one this week!
