O.K. call me dumb but I still don't get it. How can you tell a fertile egg without opening it? Can you? I just got 2 new hens and a rooster last week. The previous owner said that the eggs should be fertile for a week or so. I had a broody hen sitting on 1 to see how it goes.after five days I candled and nothing. any help?

You CAN NOT tell a fertile egg by looking at it, without breaking it, unless you set it for about a week, then candle it. By breaking it open, you can look at it to see if it is fertile, but of course that egg is then no good (except for eating, of course) If you set it, and candle it in a week, then you know your rooster is working. But usually, on a dozen eggs with a good rooster, there will be 1 or 2 that isn't fertile--maybe from a cranky hen that has PMS and wouldn't take any funny stuff from the rooster.
