How to tell if a chick is a cockerel

I have a question. I have a rhode island red, who could possibly be a rooster.

Details:
. It has normal sized feet
. Normal sized beak
. Big comb
. Regular wattle, a bit on the large size
. Normal sized spurs, a little bit on the big size
. Sassy attitude, a bit agressive, but overall is pretty sweet
. Not at the top of the pecking order
. 10 weeks old
. Clucks like a hen
. Dosen't even try to crow

Finding homes is never easy but if it's a pure bird rather than a barnyard mix you may have a little more luck.

Try Craigslist and Facebook searching for both the breed to have a group and your local area to have a poultry group.

We found a home for ours with a friend of a friend so get the word out to everyone you know too. Good luck.

Rhode Island Red cockerels should have a slightly dark shade of red on their shoulders by 10 weeks old.

Rhode Island Red cockerels should have a slightly dark shade of red on their shoulders by 10 weeks old.

Jelly (it's name) is a light shade of red. Butter (my other RI), is a darker shade, almost burgundy. No darker colors. What do you think? Pullet or Cockerel? When do cockerels begin crowing? Jelly has not yet.

Some start crowing at only a couple weeks old, some don't crow until they are over 8 months old. Both extremes and everything in between are completely normal. It just depends on the individual.
