How to tell my 4 Black Australorps apart?

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

My first flock were all black australorps and I thought the same thing, how in the world will I tell them apart! When they were chicks I actually made notes on paper...Tillie had a white spot on her head, Molly had an all black head, etc... As they grew I could start to see subtle differences. When they were adults I could really see differences in comb shape and size, face shape, height, etc... Stare at them long enough and you will be able to identify each one in a flock of 10+ birds!

Welcome aboard!

Hello, and thanks for this info. Another member said to wait till they were adults, it would be easy then. So you've confirmed that. Funny thing, my four hens, I have Tilly and Molly picked out as two of the names when I can finally tell them apart! lol

Aww....I love the old lady names for chickens. :D Molly and Tilly are fun names! I also had a Pearl and Hilda, Ethel, Lucy and Hermine!

Oh and by a month or two, they will already be standing apart in looks, combs, faces, stance, attitude, etc....

I couldnt tell my Cochin Bantams apart so their original names are not their names anymore.
Pink legband - Bubblegum
Blue legband - Sky
Purple legband - Plum
Haha, actually this is a great idea! I'm going to get some leg bands and do the same thing. That way it will be easy to remember their names, too, as long as they wear the leg bands. :)

Thank you! So far, so good. I went to a little class this morning in town about chickens and it was interesting and informative! I'm looking forward to seeing how old they will be when they start laying! :)
Black Australorps should start laying at 24 to 26 weeks. They are late layers needing more time to mature.
