How to transport to processor??

Hi

I have 30 rangers headed for the processor in a month... Only I don't know what the heck to put them in to take them. People suggest rubbermaid bins or dog crates but they're not cheap, enough of them to take that many birds. I do have access to unlimited apple crates, but those would need lids of some sort... Any suggestions??

Our local processor has crates available. They allow people to bring their birds to them in the back of a pick-up w/ topper, then transfer to the processors crates when they arrive. You could ask your processor, and perhaps they have the same service available.

Be sure there are solid bottoms in the crates so their toes and feet are not injured while transporting. Cardboard works will and it will keep your crates clean. Don't over pack; they have a tendency to overheat when crowded. Many processors want your birds delivered the night before to be sure their crops are empty.

I transported ours (Cornish Xs) in a large cardboard box and plastic container thingy. I put a tarp over a portion of both, although I don't think they were about to jump out, as I thought they would. Poor things were so scared, they just huddled together

For the crates, I would just roll a portion of chicken wire over the top. Good Luck!

I do this regularly so I bought two chicken crates, my neighbor bought two also. We schedule processing on different days so we each can use 4 crates. I have found that sharing with a good neighbor makes even better neighbors.

we had 60 this year, so we just put them in our 5 X 8 trailer that has 1ft high wood sides, put some chicken wire across the front for ventilation,and a tarp covering the rest of the top. worked great. you could probably use a truck bed with a heavy bird net tied on top too.

I pick up mine from my processor the night before. I pack up the birds in the morning around 3am then deliver to my processor by 4:30 and pick up next day.

Has anyone out there made their own crates? I was thinking about making my own and have been wondering what size or dimensions would work best and the top/door requirement.

If you have made any can you submit images?

Super idea for lids...A friend bought a former apple orchard and there are hundreds of apple crates in a pole barn there. I could put the birds in the DH's pickup truck instead of my van, better ventilation. That should work - thanks!!! By the way, I work in a nursing home and one of my residents calls me the Chicken Lady...not sure she knows my real name! So I love your screen name!
