How to treat eye?

I've got a faverolle chick that just hatched this past Thursday (4/22). He came out of the egg with his left eye closed. Jacob opened the eyelid and saw the eye but it was kind of back in its head. I know I saw the little guy open his eye Sunday. It looked a little gunky but otherwise ok. Today the entire area around his eye is red. It seems the other birds somehow decided to peck at it

. I've got the poor little thing isolated but what can I do to help the area heal ok and hopefully avoid an infection? I was thinking about maybe using an antibiotic cream? What would be the best thing to do?

I would be weary of using anything with medication in it.. As this can cause all sorts of problems.. I would just keep it isolated and maybe flush eye a few times a day with saline solution...

It's also usually available at TSC or your local feed store.

Thanks for the suggestions. At least now I can try to do something. I thought about switching the bulb in the heat lamp to a red one but I don't think it would make a difference at this point. I just feel so bad for the guy. He just peeps cuz he wants to be with his friends. Hopefully this will help take care of the poor little guy.
