How to treat Giardia?

Petsmart has something called API General Cure in the tropical fish section. It's a powder that has 250mg metronidazole and 75mg of Praziquantil. It's powder, so it will be more difficult to give and you'd probably want to give less to smaller birds.

I did end up seeing this, but it was $16 and the box only contained a few packets. I calculated I would need to buy several boxes to be able to treat 15 chickens over the course of 5 days. The price was astronomical so that's why I went with the safeguard thinking they are due for their first worming anyway, I'm hoping this will be ok.

Sorry, I re-read your post and since they all have the runs I'd order the metronidazole for sure.

Why would the safeguard not work?

I don't know enough about giardia to comment, it's something I've only read about. Safeguard sure won't hurt, so no reason not to try.

I recommend flubendazole, it's the best anti-parasitic for protozoa, which is what giardia is. You can only have it prescribed by a vet, though. How do I know this? I work for one.

I know this is an old post, but I hope I can still get some responses. My vet said my rooster had giardia, and gave him two doses of fenbendazole and 7 days of metronidazole. He got better after the treatment was complete, but took a down turn after several days. He started to have running green poops again. The only thing he will eat are scratches. I have to force feed him some scrambled eggs and vitamins. I wonder whether I need to repeat fenbendazole for another three days or try corid for the diarrhea just in case the vet didn’t catch coccidiosis. He has been having diarrhea for almost a month now. Also, shall I give him scratches as much as he can eat? I haven’t offered a lot of scratches to him because I don’t want him to get tired of them and then stop eating them too.
