How to unsubscribe from a private group

Yes, you can, Karen. I did it with several categories. Just click on the star of a category you have already subscribed to and it gives you the Unsubscribe option.

If it's a private message conversation that you were in on and you dont want to be in on it anymore, you just delete the message and ask whoever started it to remove your name from the list of recipients.
