How to use Pop Bottle Fountains?

I feel a little stupid asking this question

but what is the proper way to use the aluminum pop bottle fountains?

I ordered some for cage training my chickens and also ordered the springs. I expected them to have threads, so that you can securely attach a bottle. Instead, they are smooth inside.
I tried using them with Aquafina bottles but the water leaks. My rooster is as clueless as me-he was pecking the TOP of the bottle!

The aluminum ones I used years ago worked only with the old glass, capped, soda bottles. I am thinking that they never up dated that design in aluminum to accomodate the newer plastic bottles.
Wish I still had the two cases of clear Miller Beer quart bottles that I used then.
