How was your winter?

I myself do you supplemental light sources in my coop during the winter. The birds in my flock that didn't lay all winter were my oldest generation of birds who went through a hard molt. Younger birds three years and under who went through a light molt in a short amount of time bounced back and kept laying.

I have no power in the shed I'm using as a temporary coop for winter. Not willing to risk fire running cords. Rather let Nature be herself than take risks. One of my hens seemed to do a midwinter molt which struck me as very odd but again, I'd seen no reference to such so just rolled with it and did the best I could by her. She came thru like a champ will be making mods to the shed including properly done power this season, so fingers crossed. All of my hens are just about a year old. Will be brooding some new ones to add this year.

That's great to hear. Hope all goes well with your modifications on the shed. What breeds of chickens do you have?

Thank you for your well wishes. I have good old fashioned Rhode Island Reds and a cross of them with the Black Australorps. Also two little Bantam hens who are more or less pets to me and mascots to the hens. adding the Aracaunas (sp?) And possibly Silver Laced Wyandottes but I'm reading some negative outcomes with the slw. So that could change.

Thank you for your well wishes. I have good old fashioned Rhode Island Reds and a cross of them with the Black Australorps. Also two little Bantam hens who are more or less pets to me and mascots to the hens. adding the Aracaunas (sp?) And possibly Silver Laced Wyandottes but I'm reading some negative outcomes with the slw. So that could change.

As soon as I can figure out how to get a good image of the crosses posted, be glad to share. Doing this on a new (smart) phone and we don't quite see eye to eye yet. Most are black with like a red lion type ruff. My Carmella is just all mixed up red & black. Some are mostly black. I just love my girls. Please bear with. My time on a normal computer is limited of late. :/

Thank you. They have learned to get along well and in hard months we feed the "four footers" too. There are piebald in their number, which are sacred to us. Bringing harm...directly or indirectly...is particularly bad. But oh in the beginning when the deer visited did we laugh! And video. And snap pics...

I do not have power in my coop as well! I think providing a laying break for the girls is so important! In the last month they have been laying 6,8 or 12 eggs a day! Some are loosing their feathers on bottom because they're laying so much!

I have RR, silkies, easter egger, Braham momma, buff orps, Plymouth rocks and leghorns! They loved the snow and didn't seem to mind the cold! There were a few times they didn't go outside because of the wind I think...they are hardy birds! Glad your winter was mild! Lucky!
