How would I attach hardware cloth to chain link?

I have a dog kennel for the chicken run and wanted to line the bottom two feet or so with hardware cloth (and bury the rest of it, if I can.) I had NO idea this stuff was so hard to work with! Any ideas? Thanks!!

We used zip ties actually to attach ours. LOTS of um! It IS hard to work with isn't it! So stiff! Good luck. You could also use that thin wire that's wrapped around the hardware cloth when you buy it. We did that at the bottom for more strength.

1) lay it out on the ground and sort of gently stomp it flat, first (as opposed to having it always trying to sproing back into roll shape)

2) temporarily tack a scrap piece of wood to both ends, to give you something to pull on to get it taut. (did I mention #2.5, 'have a helper'

it is not vital, but makes life much more pleasant w/hardwarecloth)

3) I'd either 'sew' it on with decent-gauge galvanized wire, or use those sleeve type dealies that you clamp on with pliers, their name escapes me at the moment.

(e.t.a. - zip ties is also a good idea BUT they are not generally rated to withstand u/v and after a few yrs in the sun my experience is that they get brittle and weak, so if you use 'em either replace them with something metal at your leisure or at least keep an eagle eye on 'em)

Good luck,

Pat

Use nose rings for pigs or J clips for building cages. If you don't want to do that then I'd use baling wire.

If it was me I'd use hog rings (pig or shoat size) it's quicker. Also it is good advice to take some of the spring out of the wire before you hang it.just unroll it the opposite direction it is rolled in while you put pressure on it.

All clear? Good. Kidding...buy the hog rings and a hog ringer (like a pair of pliers) at a Theisen's or livestock place.

If your roll will reach, I find that rolling it past a corner helps. The corner holds it (or tie it there temporarily). Then you work towards that corner pushing it in and attaching it. I always buy some galvanised wire and cut it into 3" lengths then use that to hog tie the wire to the posts/fencing.

If you dig a trench along the fence, I would think that would aid greatly in keeping the hardware cloth in place.

Thanks, everyone! great advice as usual!!

I think I may go and lay the stuff out flat for a while. It kept rolling up on me and you should see my legs--all scratched up from the edges. Next time I try I will not be wearing shorts and flip-flops!

I dare not ask where one would get hog-nose rings! I feel like such a city slicker sometimes!

I used the cage clips and the cage clip pliers for mine. The pliers were like $7 and a bag of 500 clips was like $3. U can get them at any feed or hardware store I think. The zip ties don't last a year in the heat and cold.
