I would not give it again. It is like someone using your car to make deliveries.Sure they pay for the gas,but there is the wear-n-tear on your stuff.Even if they were to give you some of the money they make it still leaves you at risk. One time maybe, but they need to buy their own.
Few people will pay repair costs(or insure) equipment they borrow. If it breaks they often just walk away.Best wishes whatever you decide.
Hide the key.And let everyone know you do not loan out anything.
I would change the ignition in the tractor so it will have a different key. Then when this happens again the mothers key doesn't work. This will make her respect your choices. If she doesn't like it then she can buy this person his tractor.
I'd tell her you lost your key.. and can you borrow hers?..
then i'd not give the key back to her.
also..i'd tell the guy that no matter what the MIL sAys..he CANT use the tractor again. Period. Then if he comes back to use it...i'd call it in stolen.
Also..i'd be having some REAL serious words with my MIL...
I agree with most of what you al said, but DH has to handle this himself. It is not my tractor it is ours. It is not my hear that is broken - it is his. For now, the tractor is back and nothing happened.
I would have strong words with the woman. I do not do passive aggressive. If you anger me I will let you know. Passive aggressive ticks me off. She is extremely passive-aggressive and this is anger, over something else likely, coming out sideways. It is her way. She'll sing the blues about DHs "anger issues" and how he is not charitable, all the while she is being female doggish over something else altogether.
The most dangerous animal on the planet is a mother protecting her young. In my case the second most dangerous is a female protecting its mate. It is VERY hard for me not to rip her a new one, but I respect DH too much to undercut him with her.

By that same reasoning because the tractor is equally yours, you should be able to talk to his mother. Some people really can not stand up to their own parents. I would give him a time limit as to when he can have a talk with her and get the key back. YOu have to protect your business too.
I really don't know. Can you get the lock changed on the equipment or put something in place that will keep it from moving even with the key. Can you chain it down or something? Sorry if that is a stupid question.
