Yeah, how pathetic is this. I am planning my own birthday party. LOL, I had someone give me a hard time about it a few days ago and its kind of been stewing in my mind for a few days. So how tacky is it really ? I figured my chicken friends would support me.....

I had decided instead of being depressed over turning 40, being single, childless, other than dogs and chickens....I would celebrate my 40th and bring it in with a bang. So NO one and I mean no one is at all able to organize anything in my family at least anything fun....nor is the lame BF in my life, probably short lived depending on what he gives me for my birthday, able to throw a party that isnt somehow tacky.

So I took it upon myself to throw my own party. I put my mom's name and BF name on the invites as throwing the thing but its really me behind the scenes. I am just the puppet master....(evil laugh)......but its going to be a blast. We are having a pig roast, all the fixins, music and karaoke, bonfire. I have a tent rented, chairs, tables and a portapotty. Yes this is a big party. We have roughly 60+ people coming, not all the rsvp's are in yet. The date is August 25. Anyone want to come????

So anyways a friend was giving me heck for sending out my own invitations, which I made by the way, so I was like, what so wrong with that? If you want it done right do yourself!
I happened to be either blessed or cursed with the gift of organization. I do some wedding planning too on the side.

My birthday is August 24, so the big day is looming.....So what do you all think, completely tacky or justified?

If I would have left it to my family or BF I probably would have been sitting at home with a cake on my 40th birthday. I am making the BF pay for part of it though......

Totally justified!

I feel your pain of being a good organizer! I'm in the process of planning my own bachelorette party right now.

I'm getting remarried at the end of September - not that my sister/maid of honor isn't capable of planning it (she did a great job for my first bachlorette party!), I just don't want her to feel pressured to do it.

I'm shooting for something simple and fun at the house, maybe hit the bar in town, and a girls slumber party. No need for her to go through the actual process of planning when I already have it all planned out in my own mind!

Have fun and enjoy yourself!

ok - I planned a wonderful party for my big brother when he turned 29. Sent a scrapbook that I made where I contacted his best friends from elementary school thru college to write stories about him. Sent money for a keg and pizza (I was not making a lot of money then) and his friends in Florida suprised him with a "This is YOUR LIFE" party!

I planned suprises parties for my dear hubby when he turned 40, and my mom at 75....

I turned 39, nothing. I turned 40 - nothing. I turned 49 - NOTHING.

(beginning to see a pattern?) LOL!

I turned 50 this year - and I planned my OWN party!

Sometimes you just have to take the bull by the horns an go for it! I invited the family and friends to caravan a road trip down to Florida and join me on a 3 day cruise. WE HAD A BLAST!

Sounds like YOU will have a blast too! It is NOT LAME to plan your own party. It is important to celebrate life, and the fun you will have is what you will remember - not who made the plans. ENJOY!

Hey, it's your birthday; you should do whatever you want to do!

I know a lot of people who organize their own birthday parties and I think it is perfectly fine. I don't know why anyone would give you a hard time about it!

Party on!

Of course it isn't wrong!!! And not pathetic or silly, or anything!
Plan your party and make it special!!! I threw a masquarade party for my fortieth, and it turned out to be so much fun everyone is still talking about it!
Five years later I invited a crowd for my 45th, this time it was a hat party, everyone had to wear some kind of hat (if they didn't, they got a goofy kid party hat) and that turned out to be a lot of fun too!
This year, I turn fifty and I've just sent off hand made invitations. Since we also happen to be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary, I've made it a double party, celebrating with an Argentine azado and after a brief backyard reaffirming of our vows, a combination wedding/birthday cake!!
Just remember, its all about fun and celebrating life and friends. So throw a party!!!

And HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Do it up!
There is one woman in my group of friends who is a born organizer, and she LOVES to plan parties, vacations, outings, etc. If it weren't for her, the rest of us would never do anything fun! For her 40th last year, we did actually manage to plan a party, but it took several of us to do what she does effortlessly!

Good for you! Wish I could come, but you're a little far for me to travel

Anyone who criticizes you for planning your own party is just jealous and insecure!! Have a blast, and hopefully you'll recover in time to plan the next one!!

I would say, when you turn 50, plan an even bigger party and don't bother saying who's planning it. Just announce a fabulous bash and invite people.

For big birthday's, not only are you entitled to give yourself a huge bash of any type you want, but you are allowed to celebrate for the entire birthday month. For really big birthday's, some say the entire year. This may be due to decreasing stamina that requires pacing or psychological trauma, I'm not sure which.

My 40th, was so upsetting. I couldn't believe my DH didn't do ANYTHING FOR ME!! I was so hurt. He claims he hasn't the skills to do it. I told him he lives in a family of party organizers (5-sis-inlaws) ask them. It is a lame excuse on his part. I told him I better not have to plan my own 50th! He's lucky his spot in the bed didn't get taken over by one of my chickens!
I say... do it yourself too. Since when did etiquette matter any way?
