Like above if its staying mucky it's probably not big enough. If I had to use something I'd get bales of wheat straw

With deep litter you never really *clean* out the run -- just harvest compost when you want it or to reduce the height of the pile if it's stacking up too high.

I used either a hay fork or a scoop shovel depending on how cohesive it was.

x2. I just use a rake, bedding fork or hoe if I need to break it up a bit or fill int the many potholes the chickens love to leave for me to break my ankle in! Otherwise haven't "cleaned" it out in... 3 years?
