how'd I get a turkey

The other day I had one of my long time patients come in, he's been a fireman for the City of Phoenix for ages....said his wife was upset at him. I asked him why. He says, well it's not that big of a deal. He had just got a new cell phone and since he likes to know who is calling, he put in a different ring tone for everyone he knows.

When his wife calls, the phone goes, "Gobble, Gobble, Gobble."... yup, it's a real turkey call.

I laughed so hard when I heard it... of course his tongue was firmly planted in his cheek when he said he couldn't understand why she was upset....

Said his daughter didn't like her ringtone either... A parrot saying, "Rawk, it's your daughter"

I wouldn't be surprised if my DH had a ring tone for me from the song "Yakkity yak, don't talk back". His eyes tend to glaze over when I start to talk.

I had to add a turkey note. I really enjoy turkeys, I find they are very curious, watch your wedding ring, they are attracted to shiny things and will try to take it off your finger.

We had turkeys pull up every white plant name tag I had put in my gardens. This year our Bourbon Reds loved to sample each tomato as it ripened. They were going in the sweet corn and bending it to get at ears too.

I think turkeys are smarter than people give them credit for- especially the older breeds. Wild turkeys are extremely clever. They look kind of pre-historic to me - I picture Veliociraptors however thats spelled- when I see them running across the yard.

While the BB whites stay in a pen until you eat them, the older breeds fly out every chance they get. Our Bourbon reds were roosting on top of the barn- way up there, until it got snowy. Then with some intelligence they moved into the chicken coop and took over the highest roosts.
This is the first time we have left them past Thanksgiving. Next year I hope to breed the Bourbons and let them raise a family naturally.

yeah, last time I went to the butcher he had 3 UNCAGED BB white turkeys standing next to the butcher's door, looking around and not moving an inch -- for the whole time I was there! I asked him, why aren't they running away? And hewas like, I dunno. They just waited until he butchered them. My BRs would have flown outta there in a second.

My wife has her ring tone for me set as the Turkey gobble gobble also.

Ok ya'll are killing me here. I can't stop laughing! The Turkey should have been the national bird of the U.S., but it was way to delicious to protect. The American wild turkey is one of the smartest animals in our forests. Ask any turkey hunter. No other animal is as hard to hunt (except maybe cats). The tame turkey on the other hand has had the brains bred out of it, so if someone refers to you as a turkey you really should have them clarify you as either wild or domestic! You have a 50/50 shot of being on the smart side!

My big white Broad Breasted meat turkeys are smarter than most
of my chickens and friendlier too.

I have one lone White Royal Palm that I raised from an egg and 8 Bourbon Reds that I purchased as poults. The Royal Palm is so very curious and a ham. Let him see a camera and he is posing! The others could care less. But they are all very clever birds when it comes to treats.

Yes Kevin does breed some really nice turkeys but alot of them don't breed true. Just something to think about.
